Women's Release Week Three
PRESTOSPORTS/MBWA WOMEN'S
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
SJU Captures Tournament Title as McLain Claims MVP Honors
WHITE PLAINS, NY (22 December 2008) – The St. John’s
University women’s basketball team
completed a perfect 3-0 week, largely due to the efforts of this
week’s PrestoSports/Met Basketball Writers Association Player
of the Week, Monique McLean (Newport News,
VA/Bruton). The Red Storm (11-1 overall, 0-0 BIG EAST)
first defeated Howard University 66-36, then beat Buffalo 81-57 and
Boston College 72-63 to win the St. John’s-Chartwells Holiday
Classic.
For the week, McLean averaged 21.7 points and shot a blistering
53.8 percent from the field on a 21of-39 effort from the field. She
was even more effective from 3-point range, connecting on 60.0
percent of her attempts (6-of-10).
As the St. John’s-Chartwells Holiday Classic Most Valuable
Player, she led all players with 24.5 points per game. She also
shot 48.3 from the field and 66.7 from 3-point range, in addition
to leading the team in assists en route to the tournament
championship. In the championship game against BC, she took the
game into her hands and scored 12 of her 22 points in the second
half to clinch the title.
The guard became the all-time three-point record holder at St.
John’s with 148 in her career, and, just this week alone,
moved up three spots in the all-time scoring list to rank seventh
all-time with 1,312 career points. She led the team in scoring in
all three games this week, was clutch from the charity stripe with
an 89.5 free throw percentage, led the team with nine assists and
was strong defensively with a 5.0 rebounding average.
St. John’s has one game remaining this calendar year, at
Boston University on December 30. They will then return to the
Carnesecca Arena on January 3 to host Providence College.

About the PrestoSports/MBWA Weekly Player of the Week
Award
Celebrating its fifth season, the Player of the Week Award is
granted on a weekly basis by the New York Area Metropolitan
Basketball Writers Association. Each week, each of the nearly 75
schools that play college basketball in the Tri-state area have the
ability to nominate one male and one female student-athlete, based
upon their on-court accomplishments over the previous seven days.
An esteemed panel of media members votes to select the winners from
the nominations. All players who receive votes, but are not named
the Player of the Week, are then named to the Honor Roll.
