PRESTOSPORTS/MBWA WOMEN'S
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
SJU's Monique McLean Repeats as Winner
WHITE PLAINS, NY (12 January 2009) – The St. John’s
University women’s basketball team (13-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) won
its only game this past week largely due to the play of this
week’s PrestoSports/Met Basketball Writers Association Player
of th
e Week Monique McLean (Newport News,
VA/Bruton).
The senior guard scored a season-high 30 points as the Red Storm
lost to South Florida 81-71. The only player to play all 45
minutes in the overtime loss, she single-handedly gave the Red
Storm a chance to win the game, converting two of her seven free
throws with a second left in regulation to send the contest into
overtime. The senior shot 47.4% from the field, going 9-of-19. The
Newport News, Va., native was even better from downtown, shooting a
blistering 62.5% on a five-of-eight effort. Her five treys tied her
career high and tied for tenth in the Red Storm single game record
books. Also strong defensively, she grabbed seven rebounds to
finish second on the team.
A member of the BIG EAST Honor Roll this week, McLean ranks third
in the country with a 49.2 three-point field goal percentage and is
nineteenth in scoring with 19.4 points per game.
The Red Storm will host Georgetown University on Tuesday night at
the Carnesecca Arena. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.

About the PrestoSports/MBWA Weekly Player of the Week
Award
Celebrating its fifth season, the Player of the Week Award is
granted on a weekly basis by the New York Area Metropolitan
Basketball Writers Association. Each week, each of the nearly 75
schools that play college basketball in the Tri-state area have the
ability to nominate one male and one female student-athlete, based
upon their on-court accomplishments over the previous seven days.
An esteemed panel of media members votes to select the winners from
the nominations. All players who receive votes, but are not named
the Player of the Week, are then named to the Honor Roll.
