Manhattan’s Chris Smith Paces Jaspers

WHITE PLAINS, NY (15 December 2008) – Chris Smith (Millstone, NJ/Lakewood/St. Benedict’s Prep) garners this week’s PrestoSports/Met Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week award for his efforts in leading the Manhattan College Jaspers (5-3, 1-1 MAAC) to a 70-60 win over the Princeton Tigers.
The sophomore guard exploded for a career-high 35 points on Sunday. The Millstone, NJ, native hit his first seven shots, including three three-point attempts. Smith was perfect from the field for the first 16 minutes of the game and carried 18 points into the break. The Jaspers would never trail in the game. Smith finished by shooting 12-for-17 (70.6%) from the field, including four-for-five (80%) from three-point range. He also made seven of his nine free throws while adding two steals and a block. Smith leads the Jaspers and ranks fourth in the MAAC averaging 15.8 points per game this season.
Manhattan travels to face Binghamton on Saturday afternoon before returning to Draddy Gymnasium next Monday, as they will host LIU at 7pm.

About the PrestoSports/MBWA Weekly Player of the Week Award
Celebrating its fifth season, the Player of the Week Award is granted on a weekly basis by the New York Area Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association. Each week, each of the nearly 75 schools that play college basketball in the Tri-state area have the ability to nominate one male and one female student-athlete, based upon their on-court accomplishments over the previous seven days. An esteemed panel of media members votes to select the winners from the nominations. All players who receive votes, but are not named the Player of the Week, are then named to the Honor Roll.
